  Praise for The Lost Child

“Though it doesn't seem like it at first, Beyond the Stars is in fact an alien romance saga. And a very well written one, too. Inanna Ruthe Preston is our main character and she's a bit different. She doesn't know why, not yet, but she is. Her friends try their best to understand her and she even does well fitting in for some time, but her past eventually comes back to haunt her.”

  -Ryan James

“I loved Beyond the Stars! I truly couldn't put it down; there were some surprises and twists that kept me on my toes through the whole book! I enjoyed the main character, and found it easy to relate to her feelings even in situations you wouldn't expect. I did not want the book to end!”

  Prologue: Atavans and Witches

C ova, like Earth, was a planet with complex life, plants, and beautiful landmarks. Unlike Earth, all creatures, including animals, had adapted and evolved in a way where they could communicate with each other. Atavans were Cova’s humanoid species. At a glance, they looked almost identical to humans, except they had many differences. Atavans, for one, were far stronger and faster than humans. They were master swimmers, intuitive creatures, and highly powerful beings. Atavans had three lungs, which allowed them to adapt to different environments on other planets. The third lung also allowed them to sustain themselves underwater for long periods of time. Every atavan had two hearts, which helped pump oxygen in harsh climates, various pressures, and different atmospheres. More notable was their bright glow, which activated whenever using their powers.

Atavans lived far longer than humans; some would say they were immortal. Although no atavan was technically immortal, it was easy for them to last many centuries without seemingly aging. The plants of Cova combined with certain atavan abilities, helped prevent physical aging beyond their twenties. However, many chose to age gracefully while still possessing their individual powers. No atavan was identical in gifts, agilities, or even desires. Some had evolved to use
higher gifts, such as sensing emotions, seeing visions of the future, and even healing the wounded. More fascinating was that these beautiful beings could also feed off of each other’s energy fields, which meant they became stronger around those they loved. Learning to control their energy fields and powers didn’t come easy. Unfortunately, with higher gifts also came higher consequences. Overusing abilities or becoming too emotionally connected to another being could have adverse effects on their bodies. Using too much energy could make an atavan sick, or even worse, kill them.

Atavan abilities had to be self-discovered, practiced, and mastered. Some never tapped into their powers properly, whether by choice or inability. Some understood their gifts far beyond others and had higher capabilities by nature. Many atavans had even mastered how to use their full brain power, as where humans only used about ten percent of their brain. Other Covian species, like the trolls, dragons, and various creatures, did not have the same types of gifts like visions of the future or healing power. However, many creatures possessed various innate abilities that differed from creatures of Earth.

Sometimes, an atavan was mysteriously born a witch. These witches were far and few in-between, born with a special mark under their left shoulder blade. They were forced to choose between good and evil, like every other creature in Cova. Often times, they were killed at birth, or hidden from society by the parents, for fear they would be shunned or cast away. But it was harder for a witch to stay good, because the forces of darkness often offered more liberty with spells. Whether good or bad, witches were able to tap into the divine or evil realm, in order to cast spells and use sorcery.

Atavans were clearly distinct from the other creatures of Cova. There was only one atavan that had fully transformed himself physically. Kah was an atavan, who had abused his powers and overdosed on anti-aging plants and dragon blood, transforming his appearance over the years. He no longer looked atavan. He literally transformed himself into an evil reptilian creature, with the help of Jeneka the witch.

Jeneka, unlike her sister Meretseger, had chosen to use dark sorcery. This only led to further troubles in Cova, and it was only a matter of time before Jeneka’s spells granted Kah too much power. He was the sole dictator of the Kahnroch nation, whose inhabitants consisted of banished creatures of Euron, and hostile criminals who only wanted revenge to take over all of Cova.

After thousands of years, one thing still remained a secret: the hidden portals that connected Cova to Earth. It was easy to see why the few who knew about the portals had kept it a secret for so long; humans would be of great threat to Cova if they discovered the mysterious beings with such high powers. Blending in would not last long on a planet full of greedy humans, and it would only be a matter of time before atavans were uncovered. But something else was kept a secret, and it was only a matter of time before neither planet would be able to survive without each other.

  Past: An Early Prophecy

I t was a warm and humid night in Cova. A light mist danced in the air, leaving dew on all that crossed its path. Everything about the evening resonated excellence and triumph. At the time, only one nation existed in Cova – the Nation of Cova – a nation where all creatures had been welcomed to live in peace. Atavans, various creatures, and trolls alike, were all treated equally. These very patriotic people had lived in peace for many generations, with few confrontations or disagreements amongst them. It was only a matter of time before circumstances changed for the worst. During those years, trolls had become greedy and began killing and stealing from the very atavans who had welcomed them to their native land.

Now, centuries later, the Nation of Cova had overthrown the trolls who once tried taking over the kingdom. Atavans fought together and won the war, banishing and exiling any troll, good or evil, to the Dark Forest. Only a small tribe of trolls had survived, and as part of their punishment, they were cursed to never bear more children. If they ever stepped foot in the Nation of Cova, they would be put to death.

As the years went on, the powers of the atavans began awakening throughout the land of Cova. Colorful creatures, similar to atavans, began practicing their powers as well. But the atavans were by far the most advanced. Disagreements arose over the unfair treatment of those who possessed more gifts and talents. Atavans and the other creatures began fighting for land, property, and food. There was no longer a common order. The population had grown, and a leader was needed to establish a common law for all citizens of the land.

For over ten-thousand years, the Nation of Cova debated over who should be their righteous leader. The democratic panel consisted of the most gifted atavans, upsetting other creatures who felt they had no representation, so they inevitably fled to other parts of Cova. It was decided that atavans would begin a new nation. Meretseger and Jeneka, two sister witches, were called to aid in these times of turmoil and despair, but the good people of Cova did not want to be controlled by sorcery. Free will and peace were what the atavans of Cova desired, and they were becoming desperate for a true leader.

Finally, after much consideration, the atavans chose their rightful King. King Euron had proven himself to love the people, make wise decisions, and his powers exceeded the powers of any being on Cova. He was said to have cured children from diseases, helped the hungry, and refused to live lavishly for self-gain. So, on this humid night in Cova, all the atavans were congregated, celebrating the new nation that would finally be named after their beloved King Euron. The new nation of Euron.

A young witch sat amongst a crowd in the middle of the celebration, telling stories to young children. People danced and laughed, others glanced up at the stars and two full moons, while others feasted at the long golden tables. It had been a day of celebration. Prince Atum would also present himself to the nation, to assist his father until it was his time to rule over Euron. It was a time where Prince Atum could decide to also court a bride. However, the prince was not interested in love; he was only concerned with helping his father run the country fairly and justly. The time for love would come, and he was in no rush.

Kah, Queen Lana’s brother, sat in the distance. He was not one for much celebrating, and he always wore a scorn on his face. Barely making conversation, he kept to himself much of the evening, then retreated to his quarters early.

As the evening went on, the children began asking the young witch to tell them more stories. It was evident that she was a kind witch, as she was more interested in entertaining the imagination of children than using sorcery for attention. Other witches often showcased magic tricks for a crowd, or bid fortune telling at such events.

“I’m out of stories for the night,” the young witch chuckled.

“Please, Anika! You tell the best stories we’ve ever heard!” said a little boy.

Anika suddenly got a faraway look in her eyes, as images and lights began flashing in her mind like a movie reel.

  “Anika?” asked a little girl.

Anika was stiff, as if in a trance. This was no story she wanted to tell, but something overcame her.

  “Princesses…lost princesses…”

  “What?” asked a boy.

“There will be princesses…” Anika continued.

“Is this another story?” a girl inquired in confusion.

A mother approached, as chills ran up her spine. The young witch was in fact having a vision.

“Children, go play in the courtyard,” the mother commanded.

Anika began twitching and mumbling incohesive words in Covian.

“What is it, Anika?” the woman asked her.

Others began approaching as Anika tried to speak.

“There will be princesses…there will be death…”

The people began gathering around, and the King and Queen approached as well. Everyone became quiet, leaving only the sound of the night. It was rare that a witch would speak a prophecy. This would be a moment in history, one that everyone would remember. They listened intently, awaiting more.

  “Princesses
illness…great famine…a terrible war. One will stray…one will perish…one will stay…one will stray…one will perish…one will stay,” she kept repeating.

  Everyone looked around nervously.

  “Princesses…illness, famine, war…one will stray…one will perish… one will stay…”

“Oh Creator,” whispered Queen Lana to herself.

“Cova can only be saved by the chosen. The stones…the stones…the stones…”

Anika snapped out of it before she could finish.

“Anika!” shouted King Euron. “Do you know more or when this will take place?”

Anika looked around the crowd. She did not have experience in fortune telling or visions of the future. Fear struck her, making her eyes fill with tears.

“Anika, speak! What else can you tell us?” demanded Queen Lana.

Anika shook her head and tears fell from her eyes.

“I am sorry. I do not know what overcame me,” she said very weakly.

“Bring her water,” commanded King Euron to his men. “The feast has come to an end. Everyone retreat to your properties and be well tonight.”

Everyone scurried back to their homes, mumbling softly to one another, worried for the great prophecy that had just been told. Meretseger who watched in the distance, stood perfectly still. She was still young and beautiful. Her long red hair and shiny mocha skin glistened in the moonlight. Her crystal, almost white eyes, danced around, taking in the scenery before her. She would have to study this prophecy, and pray that a vision came to her. For this evening, she’d retreat to her home and probably pace until the sun came up.

“It is time to retreat, Meretseger. Go and rest,” King Euron said kindly.

With that, Meretseger left towards her humble home in the town. Although she was a powerful witch, she chose to keep to herself on the outskirts of Euron. She knew that today marked the beginning of a long and painful journey for planet Cova.
